The Honorable Louie Gohmert
United States House of Representatives
2243 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515-4301.

Sir:
We need to talk, seriously.  I’m not in your district, but this concerns everybody, and your long range perspective and interest in what nature will tolerate renders you unusually valuable.

This is in response to a suggestion that some homosexual couples and straight couples be put on islands to see what happens.  I have seen this described as “controversial.”  My first reaction is, “Is that the best they can do?  Why not say, ‘outrageous?’”  But “controversial” is no idle threat.  I have seen a policy statement from one of the world’s top scientific journals saying they will no longer publish “controversial” papers.  And exactly what is science if not controversy?  They really think that everything important is known?  Outrageous.

I am told your experiment has already been more or less done.  Some Mediterranean country banished their gays to an island many years ago.  The most recent word is that they have the lowest death rate and highest degree of personal satisfaction of any similar sized group in the world.  I could try to run down a reference, but I’m sure you are buried in messages to the same effect.  Besides, it’s not really relevant. You are talking about dying out.

And we are.

The cause is failure to marry kin.  If a population stubbornly refuses to have kin marry, they will die out as surely as if they were all gay.  I’ll enclose a copy of a letter I sent Donald Trump with the short version.  For the longer version go to the second link I give.  Or, if you want to follow the links more easily, go to nobabies.net and click on the October 1 link.

Anyway, here we are outbreeding with wild abandon.  In rich countries birth rates seem to have stabilized moderately below replacement, which is not so bad in and of itself, but as soon as they stabilize the age at first marriage starts to rise.  Birth rates even then fluctuate, but that age at first marriage, once it starts upwards, never slows down.  Don’t take my word for it.  Go to Gapminder.com, load “Gapminder world” and set up the graph with total fertility rate on the bottom (it’s the first choice on the menu) and on the side set up “age at first marriage, women” (“population” at next to the bottom on the main menu and then the bottom of the sub menu).  Play the stats over the past fifty or a hundred years or so.  See if you don’t agree with me.

Then give me a jingle at the number above, and let’s see what we can do about it.  Your first duty, of course, is to your constituency, but you also represent the whole country.  And I dare say your constituency will not survive the coming crunch, although I don’t have numbers.

Sincerely,

M. Linton Herbert MD
